From Marie Kondo Fan to KonMari Consultant: The KonMari Consultant Course

In this blog post, I outline the steps to becoming a KonMari Consultant, including what to expect from the consultant training course and how to prepare for it.

I've always been fortunate to possess the "tidy gene" but when it came to managing my home, being a mum, and juggling a busy career, I found it challenging to keep my home feeling the way I wanted.  In 2017, everything became easier after reading Marie Kondo's “life changing magic of tidying up”. I realised that the KonMari Method™ is more than just a way to declutter and organise my home; it had a philosophy that resonated with me. I was hooked and set out to declutter and get organised.

The results were transformative and had a long-lasting impact extending beyond my home. Seeing the positive results of my home organisation made me realise that many other families could benefit from the same process. I wondered if I could turn my skills and newfound passion for the KonMari Method™ into a career. As I soon discovered, the answer was a resounding yes.

What is a Certified KonMari Consultant

A certified KonMari Consultant is a home organisation expert trained in Marie Kondo’s unique tidying method to help clients change their homes and lives.  As soon as I heard about the certification process, I knew it was something I wanted to do to prepare me for helping other people in their homes.

• The KonMari Consultant program is designed to provide budding professional home organisers with the skills and knowledge to support clients on their home organisation journeys. Once you become a certified KonMari Consultant, you will be featured in the consultant area of the KonMari.com website and can use the trademarked Konmari method™. This gives your business instant credibility and provides potential clients with the confidence to work with you.

As of June 2024, there are 38 certified consultants in the UK, ranging from newly qualified Green-level consultants to Master consultants who've completed over 1500 hours helping clients tidy their homes.

KonMari Consultant Training

I trained with Marie Kondo and the KonMari team in April 2018 at the first European Consultant Seminar in London. 107 aspiring KonMari consultants from across the world attended the 3 day consultant course. It was a great opportunity to learn alongside people from across the world and I immediately felt at home as we all shared a passion to help people find what Sparks Joy in homes and lives.

KonMari introduced virtual consultant training courses in 2021 so you can choose between online or in-person training.  The next European KonMari Consultant Course takes place at London ExCeL on 18-20th October this year. Learn more about training to be a KonMari Consultant on the KonMari website.

How do you become a certified KonMari consultant

To become a certified KonMari Consultant you need to follow these steps:

1. Read Marie Kondo’s books and tidy your own home

By reading “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy” you will gain an overview of the KonMari Method that you can then put into practice as you declutter and organise your own home.  All KonMari Consultants have tidied their own homes so they can fully empathise with their clients. 

2. Attend a KonMari Consultant Certification Course

Learn more about the philosophy and process of the KonMari Method and work with clients from the KonMari team and experienced KonMari consultants.  This is a great opportunity to network with people in a similar position to you, from around the world and build lasting friendships.  I keep in regular contact with the friends I made at my training course in 2018.

3. Work with practice clients as a KonMari Consultant in Training

After completing the Consultant Certification Course, you will continue your training by working with ‘practice clients’.  You’ll need to find your own practice clients for this part of your certification training and it’s helpful to have these lined up before you attend the course as you’ll be eager to put your new skills into practice. 

One of your practice clients must declutter and organise their whole home using the entire KonMari process, completing all 5 KonMari categories.

You will complete a report for each client ‘tidying’ session, detailing what you’ve learned and experienced in each session.  This client experience is invaluable for putting into practice the skills you have learned with the ongoing support of a dedicated KonMari certification coach.

4. Pass the KonMari Consultant Exam

The KonMari exam evaluates your understanding of Marie Kondo's method, its underlying philosophy, and real-life application. Your training as a KonMari Consultant and practice clients will prepare you for the exam.

5. Sign your Consultant Contract

After passing the consultant exam, you will have a call with a KonMari team member and be welcomed into the KonMari Consultant Community.  Once you have signed the consultant contract and paid your annual membership fee ($500) you will be listed on the KonMari.com website as a Certified KonMari Consultant.   

There’s no specified time frame for completing the process as a guide, it took me 6 months to complete the steps to become a certified KonMari Consultant.

What to expect from the KonMari Consultant Certification Course

Marie Kondo and the KonMari team only run a limited number of in-person certification courses so expect it to be very popular!  My 2018 KonMari certification course in London had over 100 attendees.  Most were from Europe but we also had attendees who had travelled from China, America and Australia.

The 3 day course covers the following topics:

• The KonMari Philosophy: an overview of the principles of Marie Kondo’s method to help consultants understand how joy, gratitude and tidying by category are central to helping clients make the confident steps to change their homes and lives.

• Mastering the Tidying Process: Teaching practical skills like folding and guiding clients through each category of the KonMari Method. 

• Client Communication and Support: Introducing effective communication skills to help you establish rapport and support clients during and between decluttering sessions.

• Advice on building a successful professional organising business: This part of the course will include topics such as starting your professional organising business, identifying your ideal client and marketing your company.
  

After completing the course, you will become a KonMari Consultant in training. You will be paired with a dedicated Certification Coach who will offer remote support and answer any questions as you begin using the KonMari Method with your practice clients. Your training will also include access to additional business enrichment workshops and quarterly live Consultant In Training salons hosted by a certified KonMari Consultant.

How much does it cost to become a KonMari Consultant?

The cost of attending a KonMari Certification Course is £2350* (payable in dollars - $2998), and once qualified, there is an annual membership and licensing fee £395 ($500).
