My KonMari Transformation Story: More Than Just a Tidy Home

I've always been naturally tidy, but juggling motherhood, a demanding career, and running a household left me feeling overwhelmed and constantly behind.

Everything shifted in 2017 when I read Marie Kondo's Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I realised the KonMari Method™ isn’t just about decluttering and organising - it’s a whole philosophy that truly resonates. I was hooked and immediately started decluttering and getting organised. Within weeks of implementing the KonMari Method™, our home wasn't just organised - it felt peaceful. My stress levels dropped dramatically. Most surprisingly, I found myself with more time and mental space for what truly mattered.

The transformation was so profound that friends asked for help. That's when I realised: if this method could create such positive change in my life, imagine what it could do for other families. Could I turn my love of tidying into a career? The answer, as I discovered, was a definite yes!

What is a Certified KonMari Consultant

A certified KonMari Consultant is a home organisation expert trained in Marie Kondo’s unique tidying method to help clients change their homes and their lives.

The KonMari Consultant program gives aspiring professional organisers the skills and knowledge to support clients on their home organisation journeys. The certification opens doors you simply can't access otherwise:

KonMari Consultant Training

I was fortunate to train directly with Marie Kondo and her team at the first European Consultant Seminar in London, April 2018. Sharing that room with over 100 aspiring individuals from around the world, people who had travelled from China, America, Australia, and across Europe was incredibly inspiring.

Since 2021, KonMari has introduced virtual training options, but there's something special about learning in person. The upcoming London course (17-19 October 2025 at London ExCeL) is particularly exciting as it's the only in-person course this year where Marie Kondo will be present. What You'll Learn in the 3-Day KonMari Consultant Training Course

Day 1: Foundation & Philosophy

A deep dive into the principles and philosophy of the KonMari Method.
Understanding how joy, gratitude, and tidying by category are central to helping clients make confident steps to change their homes and lives.

Day 2: Mastering the KonMari Method

How to guide clients through each of the 5 categories with practical advice and skills around folding techniques and storage solutions.
Client Communication and Support: introducing effective communication skills to help you establish rapport and support clients during and between decluttering sessions.

Day 3: Building Your Business

Guidance around starting your professional organising business, identifying your ideal client and marketing your company.

Your Step-by-Step Path to becoming a Certified KonMari Consultant

To become a certified KonMari Consultant you need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Master the KonMari Method at Home (2-3 months)

Before you can guide others, you need to experience the transformation yourself. Read both "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" and "Spark Joy," then work through all five categories in your own home. This isn't just preparation, it's essential for understanding what your future clients will experience.

Pro tip: Document your journey with before/after photos and notes about challenges you faced. This becomes valuable content for your future business.

Step 2: Attend the KonMari Consultant Certification Course (3 days)

Learn more about the philosophy and process of the KonMari Method from the KonMari team and experienced KonMari consultants. This is a great opportunity to network with people in a similar position to you, from around the world and build lasting friendships.

What to prepare beforehand:

· Line up potential practice clients (friends, family, colleagues)

· Create a simple tracking system for your training hours

· Join online KonMari communities to start networking

Step 3: Complete Your Training Hours (3-4 months) as a Consultant In Training

You'll work with practice clients under the guidance of a dedicated Certification Coach. Requirements include:

One full-home client completing a tidying festival of all 5 categories
Additional clients to build your skills
Submit detailed session reports showing your progress and learning

This phase is where the real learning happens. Every client teaches you something new about the method and about yourself as a consultant.

Step 4: Pass the Certification Exam

The exam covers method knowledge, philosophy, and practical application. Your course training and client experience will prepare you thoroughly.

Step 5: Join the Consultant Community

After passing your exam, you'll have a call with the KonMari team and sign your consultant contract. The annual membership fee is $500 USD (approximately £395), which includes your listing on the KonMari website and ongoing training opportunities and support. My timeline: The entire process took me about 6 months, but there's no rush, you can work at a pace that suits your life.
