6 Easy Habits to keep your home organised & clutter-free

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's easy for our living spaces to succumb to piles of clutter. But fear not!  Maintaining a clutter-free home doesn't have to be difficult. Having a few quick and easy habits, that you do consistently, will help you keep your home organised and clutter-free.  I'm sharing 6 of my favourite 2-minute habits to help you keep your home clutter-free in 2024.

2. Clear your Bedside Table

Marie Forleo quote about success "success doesn't come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently"

Declutter Kitchen Worktops and Surfaces

Kitchens are probably the busiest room in our homes.  We use them for cooking, eating, doing laundry, overseeing homework, fixing bikes…  The list is endless, it’s no wonder that they can quickly become cluttered with the daily activities that pass through them.

A clutter-free kitchen not only makes meal preparation more efficient but creates a more pleasant space to spend all that time in!  Take a few minutes each day to clear down worktops, return items to their homes and wipe down the surface. Imagine coming down to a clutter-free kitchen in the morning or being able to cook a delicious meal without the frustration of constantly shuffling items around – it can be a game-changer!

Clear your Bedside Table

Your bedside table is a personal sanctuary but can also be a useful surface to place all the bits and pieces that don’t have a home in your bedroom.  Studies have shown that clutter is noise that your brain needs to process, so, a messy bedside table isn’t conducive for a restful night's sleep.

Adopting a simple nightly routine of clearing away unnecessary items ensures a calm environment to help you wind down at the end of the day.  A clutter-free bedside table ensures you wake up in a tidy space, ready to face the day.

Tidy Your Workspace

Boost your productivity by tidying up your workspace. A cluttered desk can easily lead to a multitude of distractions, making it difficult to focus and slowing you down as you can’t find the things you need.

Take a minute to clear away unnecessary items and consider using baskets to store things neatly. This not only enhances your focus but also makes your workspace a more inviting and organised place to be. You'll find you'll get so much more done!

Declutter and Organise Bathroom Make-Up and Toiletries

Imagine the joy of a tidy bathroom – a small effort for a big impact!

Your bathroom should be a clean and calm space where you can relax at the start and end of each day.  Removing empty bottles from the shower, putting lids back on products and finding a home for your toiletries is key to keeping your bathroom clutter-free.  Taking a minute each day to organise your toiletries will speed up your morning routines and make cleaning the space super easy.

Identify and Cure Clutter Hotspots

Use plants or ornaments to solve clutter hotspots

Every home has its clutter hotspots, surfaces that seem to attract mess like a magnet. Identify these trouble zones and spend a couple of minutes tidying them up. Then try this simple organising tip:

Add something attractive like a plant or ornament.

Once you’ve made the conscious decision to make a space look nice you’re less likely to leave papers or other bits and pieces there.

It works straight away and is an attractive way to keep your surfaces clutter-free.

Banish paper clutter

Dealing with the constant influx of mail into your home can be overwhelming, but adopting a simple mail management routine can bring order to the chaos.

Designate one place for your mail and take a minute to sort and recycle immediately.  Gaining control over paper clutter with a system to deal with incoming and pending mail will keep your hallway and kitchen worktops clear.

I use a redaction roller to remove personal information from our post, once this is done unwanted letters can be put straight into the recycling bin.

The journey to a clutter-free home doesn't have to be a daunting task. By incorporating these six simple habits into your daily routine, you’re creating a more organised, calm and enjoyable living space where you can relax and focus on the stuff that’s important to you rather than constantly firefighting to get things done.  Remember, it's not about perfection but progress – one minute at a time.
